CHAPTER SEVEN

After dinner, everyone gathered in the living room. Miguel played by the window with an action hero, scaling his abuela's lace sheer, when Diego's skin prickled. The six-year-old stiffened and peered out the window. Diego leaned forward in his chair, knowing full well what the sensation meant. Miguel left his toy hanging and made a beeline to Diego. He was shaking his little hands in front of him until Diego picked him up. Miguel's arms snaked around his neck and fiercely held on.

"Bruja is outside," Miguel whispered in Diego's ear. His gaze slid over to Abuela, who approached the window, her eyes narrowing as she peered out.

He squeezed his nephew reassuringly, moving to meet her and look out to the street where a white Cadillac sat idling.

"What do you feel, mijo?" he asked, not taking his gaze off the car.

"Ants crawling on my skin, Tio Diego. In my dreams, Abuela Sonja says he's the White Witch, a bruja, and to stay away from him," the boy whispered in hushed fear.

He dropped his gaze to his abuela. She reached out to take Miguel from him, but before he let his nephew go he said, "She's right. Do not go near him. Don't talk to him or let him touch you. Run away, comprende, and find your madre or an adult."

Miguel nodded his head and Sonja carried him over to Juana. He didn't answer the unspoken question in his hermana's eyes when she noted Miguel's withdrawn behavior. Beck followed him to the entryway.

"You can't come out there with me. I don't want him to see you." He didn't need the Cadillac Man to guess at how much Beck meant to him. Diego sat on the bench and started pulling on his shoes.

"What's wrong?"

"There is a drug lord outside."

"Wait. What? Right now?" Beck grabbed his own shoes.

"The Cadillac Man has been stalking these streets for a long time. I'm serious. You can't come with me." He grinned at Beck's glower.

"I know that name, Diego. He's deadly. You have no idea the number of people who want to get their hands on him. He's been in hiding for years. The leads on him ran cold, the paper trails disappeared, and he happened to show up here? I don't like it. You shouldn't go out there without backup. He's too dangerous for you to face him alone."

"No, Beck." Diego received a mulish look. "Not this time. He's been haunting my familia for a while. He doesn't have a reason to harm me. He would've done so by now if he did. You, on the other hand, aren't safe if you come. I don't want to him know how much you mean to me."

"And you're safe with him?" Beck challenged.

Hector paid for my safety with his blood. "More than you. Don't let him see you and, no matter what happens, don't come out." He could tell Beck wanted to argue.

Be bold, his abuela had said.

He kissed Beck like he'd wanted to days ago, hot, wet, and bruising.
